When Time-Life told its West Coast bureau chief that it was time to move to a new post, Robert Schulman, not wanting to leave Seattle, decided instead to jump to a new medium that he saw possibilities in as “a thousand pound pencil.”
In 1958 KING-TV hired Schulman as director of special features. In the words of station owner Dorothy Bullitt, Schulman’s hiring “…follows the company’s concept of responsibility to the end that true reporting, researched, developed and objectively produced, will give the area a clearer understanding of vital issues.”
A few months later, Schulman would deliver in the form of one of the first news documentaries produced by a local television news station.
Lost Cargo aired on June 25th, 1959. The ninety minute program visually showed problems at the Port of Seattle, bringing change to how business was conducted on the waterfront and a lasting legacy that a local television operation could do Murrow-style network journalism covering a local issue too.
